Phase Breakdown
- Phase 1: Phase 1 (100-75% health)TriggerFight start, in The Excavation's circular arenaMechanicBasic attacks are easily dodged, and the main strategy is baiting his spell casts to counterattack. He hurls fireballs from his staff, strikes your location with lightning, and creates earth pillars that explode with lightning while he backs away.CounterHis attacks come with voice-line cues, learning a few of them (in particular the fireball and location-strike calls) lets you punish the cast window rather than just reacting defensively.
- Phase 2: Escalating Mid-Fight (75-50% health)TriggerHealth thresholds at roughly 75%, 65%, and 60%MechanicNew layers stack on top of his base kit: a center-arena teleport with a large blast (stand in the safe zone directly beneath him), rings of rock that then require you to escape all layers before a second explosion, scattered electrified boulders that detonate if approached, and eventually a full arena shrink as two massive pillars collapse into rubble.CounterPrioritize destroying or avoiding the electrified boulders before they detonate rather than ignoring them, and use the smaller arena space at the 50-60% mark to your advantage once it shrinks, there's nowhere left to kite carelessly.
- Phase 3: Final Stretch (Below 50% health)TriggerAround 50% and 40% healthMechanicHe begins teleporting to the arena edges to summon walls of earth you must run through rather than around, and eventually swings his lightning whip in a repeating teleport-and-beam sequence, casting the beam attack up to three times in a row from different positions.CounterRun through the earth walls rather than trying to path around them, that's the intended counter. For the lightning whip sequence, dodge roll the beam or reposition behind him each time he teleports.

- Standing near an electrified boulder when it detonates instead of clearing them proactively
- Running out of safe space once the arena shrinks and continuing to kite as if it hadn't

Benedictus, First Herald of Utopia is a major Act 4 boss found in The Excavation, at the Precursor Forge. Defeating him is required to progress The Search questline. He fights with a mix of Physical, Fire, and Lightning damage through a staff (rock and fireball throws) and a lightning whip (ranged strikes and beam attacks), and the fight escalates through several distinct health thresholds rather than a simple two-phase split.
Cap your Lightning and Physical resistances heavily before attempting this fight. Both damage types are present throughout, and the later thresholds compound multiple hazards at once.
Note on Act 4’s true final boss
Benedictus is a major story gatekeeper, but he is not Act 4’s final fight. After reforging the Weapon, Tavakai steals it, and the act concludes with a separate three-phase encounter against Tavakai, The Consumed in the Heart of the Tribe at Ngakanu.
