Mercenary
Overview
A versatile ranged fighter who can destroy enemy shields or armour with rapid fire, wall off paths with grenades, or shotgun bosses down at close range. The crossbow's multiple ammo types give this class more built-in combo potential than most.
Playstyle Notes
- Combo attacks across ammo types (freeze then shatter, poison cloud then detonate) are a core part of the class fantasy
- All three Ascendancies support the popular grenade/ballista leveling archetype, they differ mainly in endgame identity
- Gemling Legionnaire uniquely breaks the normal gem-socket limits, unlocking build combinations no other Ascendancy can replicate
Good For
- Players who like combo-based, multi-tool ranged gameplay
- Anyone wanting strong party utility through Witchhunter or Tactician
- Players chasing maximum build flexibility via Gemling Legionnaire, once they can afford the investment
Choosing an Ascendancy
Choosing an Ascendancy
Witchhunter is frequently rated the strongest all-rounder of the three, mixing burst damage, party-friendly Culling Strike, and a genuinely strong defensive option in its Sorcery Ward package. Tactician is the most commonly recommended pick for the well-tested Grenade Ballista leveling path specifically. Gemling Legionnaire has the highest ceiling and build freedom in the class, but its currency requirements make it a poor budget or league-starter choice.
