This is a generator: answer 5 questions and get a working filter without needing to understand filter syntax first. If you outgrow it, any .filter file (including the one this generates) can be opened and hand-edited, or imported into FilterBlade as a starting point.
Where do I put the downloaded .filter file?
On PC, open Path of Exile 2, go to Options → Game → Item Filter, and use the button there to open your filters folder directly — drop the file in, then select it from the in-game dropdown. On console, filters are managed through your linked pathofexile.com account.
Will this filter hide valuable items by mistake?
All Unique-rarity items are always shown regardless of your settings, since a filter that can accidentally hide a unique defeats the purpose. Waystones and currency thresholds scale with the game stage you select, so switching from 'leveling' to 'endgame' after you actually reach endgame is worth doing — a leveling filter left on during endgame will show far too much clutter.
