Covers the gem system as of patch 0.5.4b, including 0.5.0's Kalguuran skill additions

PoE2 Skill Gems, Support Gems & Spirit Gems

PoE2's gem system looks familiar if you've played the original Path of Exile, but the details changed enough that carrying over PoE1 assumptions will trip you up. Here's how it actually works.

The four gem types

Skill Gems

Your active abilities — spells and attacks. Tied to weapon type, not class, so what you can use depends on what you're holding, not who you're playing.

Support Gems

Modify a linked Skill Gem — extra damage, added effects, changed behavior. Up to 5 per skill, though you'll need to unlock sockets beyond the first 2-3. Each linked support adds +5 to that skill's relevant attribute requirement, and the same support gem can't be used on two skills at once.

Spirit Gems

Persistent buffs and auras, similar to PoE1 auras — they reserve Spirit (a separate resource pool) to stay active rather than being cast repeatedly.

Meta Gems

Advanced gems that also reserve Spirit, but have their own sockets for other Skill Gems. They auto-trigger the slotted skills once a condition is met, tracked through an Energy mechanic — for example, a Cast on Shock meta gem builds Energy every time you shock an enemy.

How to actually get and upgrade gems

0.5.0's Kalguuran skills — the newest wrinkle

Return of the Ancients added a batch of Kalguuran skills tied to the new Runic Ward resource. These are unusual in three ways: they cost Runic Ward instead of mana, they carry no attribute requirements, and they ignore weapon restrictions — meaning any class can slot them in regardless of gear investment. If you're specifically leaning into the Runes of Aldur league mechanic, these are worth checking out early.

Notable named gems worth knowing

A working reference, not a complete list — these are gems that come up repeatedly across current build guides, organized by category.

Popular Actives (cross-class)

  • Twister / Whirling Slash — the spear combo usable by nearly any class, currently one of the most-played mechanics in the game.
  • Spark / Arc / Ice Nova / Comet — Sorceress and Witch elemental staples, all viable primary damage skills from leveling into endgame.
  • Bonestorm — a safe, ranged spell-totem option popular across multiple Witch ascendancies.
  • Explosive Grenade / Cluster Grenade / Artillery Ballista — the core Mercenary/Warrior grenade and totem toolkit.

Persistent Buff / Spirit Gems

  • Herald of Ash / Ice / Thunder — elemental buff auras that also add direct damage effects, a staple across many builds regardless of class.
  • Determination / Clarity — defensive and resource-sustain auras carried over conceptually from the original Path of Exile.
  • Meditate — the Monk Invoker's signature Energy Shield recharge channel.

Meta Gems

  • Cast on Shock — builds Energy from shocking enemies, then auto-triggers its socketed skill.
  • Cast on Critical — one of the most build-defining Meta Gems in the current patch, especially strong on Blood Mage, Stormweaver, and Gemling Legionnaire.

Lineage Gems (endgame-only)

  • Uul-Netol's Embrace — drops from Xesht, the Breach pinnacle boss; adds physical-as-extra-chaos damage plus Armour Break to its supported skill.
  • Zarokh's Refrain — drops exclusively from Zarokh, the Temporal in the Trial of the Sekhemas.
  • Most Lineage Gems are significantly stronger than regular Support Gems, but tied to a specific pinnacle boss drop rather than general Atlas farming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are skills tied to my class in PoE2?

No — this is one of the biggest differences from the original Path of Exile. Skills in PoE2 are tied to the weapon you're holding, not your class, so any class can use any weapon-appropriate skill.

How do I get new skill gems?

You don't find finished gems as drops. Instead, monsters and quests drop Uncut Gems (Uncut Skill Gem, Uncut Spirit Gem, Uncut Support Gem), which you turn into a specific skill of your choice through the Gemcutting menu. The Uncut Gem's level determines what you can engrave or upgrade.

How many Support Gems can I link to one skill?

Up to 5 sockets per skill, though only 2-3 are available right away — unlocking the rest requires a specific item. Each Support Gem you link also raises that skill's attribute requirement by +5 in the corresponding stat.

What's the difference between Spirit Gems and Meta Gems?

Both reserve Spirit and function like persistent buffs. Spirit Gems are self-contained — they just apply their effect. Meta Gems have their own sockets where you slot in other Skill Gems, and they'll automatically trigger those slotted skills once a condition (tracked via an Energy meter) is met.

What are Lineage Gems?

Significantly more powerful Support Gems that only drop from Atlas endgame content, with some tied to specific bosses. They're a notch above regular supports and worth prioritizing once you're mapping.
